FAQs
Will people think I am crazy if I consult a psychiatrist?

No. Seeking help from a psychiatrist is a sign of strength and not weakness. Mental health is as important as physical health.

About 1 in every 4 individuals are affected by mental health issues worldwide. And more than 70% people don’t seek help from a mental health professional.

Mental health diseases are treatable if diagnosed early and treated properly. Unfortunately, a significant stigma still exists about mental health in some cultures and communities.

Remember, going to a psychiatrist means you are actively trying to prioritise your mental wellbeing and it’s a first step towards healing and recovery.

Are psychiatric medications addictive?

No. Antidepressants and antipsychotic medications commonly used to treat psychiatric illness are not addictive if used judiciously.

However, stopping the medicines abruptly without consulting the doctor can cause Discontinuation syndrome or Withdrawal Reaction.

+
Will the medication keep me drowsy throughout the day?

Some medications may cause drowsiness but the doctor will adjust the dose accordingly at night so that your day time routine is not disturbed and can replace the morning medication with the non-sedative alternatives.

+
Do I need to take medicine for the rest of my life, if I start psychiatric treatment?

No. For most of the acute cases, duration of psychiatric medication lasts for 6-12 months followed by gradually tapering the doses.

For most of the chronic cases, cases with relapses, cases with multiple episodes, case with poor compliance, cases with string family history of illness, etc. medication may continue for a longer period of time depending upon the type and severity of the illness.

And Yes, there are patients who live a symptom free life after stopping all the medications.

+
Does psychiatric medication cause weight gain or life-threatening side effects?

No. Like any other medication for any other medical illness, psychiatric medication can cause some unwanted side effects but it’s usually possible to find a medication that outweigh side effects.

One should always inform the doctor if they:
- Are taking other medication
- Having other medical illness
- Are pregnant/breastfeeding
- Have family history of similar illness
- History of allergy to any medication
- Any recent surgery

+
If a medication has worked for a friend/relative, will it work for me?

Many psychiatric disorders have similar symptoms but are treated differently keeping in mind genetic, social, personal, psychological and other factors in mind. Your friend may have other conditions present, or they may require a different dose, so avoid taking any medication without consulting the doctor.

+
Will I feel better immediately after taking the medications?

You might not feel better immediately after starting the medication. It usually takes at least two to four weeks before you notice a change in your mood. Sometimes it can take even longer. Taking the medicine every day as directed helps increase the chance that it works.
